About Senator Bret Allain
State Senator Bret Allain was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 2011 from District 21 that includes Iberia, Lafourche, St. Mary and Terrebonne Parishes. He is currently serving his 3rd and final term in the Louisiana State Senate.
Born and raised along Bayou Teche in St. Mary Parish, Bret began working at the age of 13 in the cane fields his family has worked for generations. He worked in the farm shop during the summer and scrapped cane during grinding season.
After high school, Bret enrolled in an Agricultural Engineering program at LSU where he also studied Agronomy, Business and History. After graduating from LSU, he returned to the farm and worked with his father and his uncle.
In 1990 at the age of 32, Bret assumed the responsibility of running the farm and various land companies that his family owned after his father’s death. Since then, Bret has helped to expand his businesses into the oil and gas industry, including leasing land to the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP).
Senator Allain currently serves as President of St. Mary Sugar Cooperative, a sugar mill his grandfather helped create.
Bret’s public service did not begin with his election as a state senator. In 1999, he accepted an appointment to the Louisiana State Mineral Board and served on that board for most of the Foster Administration.
In 2004, and again in 2008, Bret was appointed to the Louisiana Agriculture Finance Authority (LAFA) and was its Vice-Chairman until becoming a senator.
In the Senate, Bret serves as Chairman of the Senate Revenue & Fiscal Affairs Committee. He also has been appointed to serve on Senate & Governmental Affairs, Natural Resources and the Agriculture committees. He also serves on Jt. Budget, Jt. Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay and State Bond Commission.
Bret is President of Adeline Planting Co., Allain-LeBreton Land Co., Allain Land Co. and Charenton Crawfish Farms.
Senator Allain has been married for 36 years to the Kim McElveen Allain. They are the proud parents of 3 children: Dr. Quin Allain Bixler, Emma Allain and Robert Allain. They are also proud grandparents to 3 wonderful grandchildren.
